Here at StaxUP Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Joey Ovalle, who is celebrating his 1-year anniversary with StaxUP Storage.
Afton: What kind of jobs did you have before working in the self storage industry?
Joey: I worked at Seaworld as a Full-Time Assistant Manager for seven-plus years where I worked in several aspects such as leading the rides team and creating schedules, holiday events, conducting safety inspections for all rides, and, most importantly, I was the all-around fun guy in the office.
Afton: How does your current position compare to your Sea World job?
Joey: It doesn't. There are a lot of similar aspects, but just working closely with customers and getting to know them is something I enjoy doing, as opposed to my previous job where I would speak to crowds rather than individual people. The connection StaxUP Storage has with its customers is something that sets it apart from other companies and that is something that really stands out.
Afton: How did you start working for StaxUP Storage?
Joey: A friend who already works in the company recommended me to the job.
Afton: Did anything surprise you about working in self storage?
Joey: How busy it can get and how closely you work with customers.
Afton: What’s the most important thing you’ve learned while working with customers over the last year?
Joey: Moving can be a very stressful time for people.
Afton: Who do you think has been the most helpful in answering questions you've had about the job?
Joey: I am so lucky to be working with a great, supportive team: Alejandra, Tony, Yessenia, and Monique have been amazing guides and teachers when it comes to solving new problems I encounter. Really happy to have them help.
Afton: Is there anything you wish you would have known before starting your work with StaxUP Storage?
Joey: I wish I would've known how much happens in a workday.
Afton: What was your life like a year ago?
Joey: My life was good, but I was bored at work. Working at Ballpark and StaxUP really shook things up for me, which I enjoy thoroughly.
Afton: What do you like to do outside of work, do you have any hobbies?
Joey: I play the guitar with a couple of friends and I also love to go hiking. I love to travel as much as I can.
Afton: What is the area around the facility like and do you live there?
I work at various locations but I work predominantly in Downtown and the area always has events going on. I live in North Park, but the communities are similar at times.
Afton: Are there any famous sights or points of interest people should take note of when visiting your facility?
Joey: A famous sight would be Petco Park. I personally like Hodad’s Burgers and catching a show at the House of Blues is a great venue to attend.
Afton: What are your favorite restaurants around the facility?
Joey: Breakfast Republic, Tajima (Ramen), Berkeley's Pizza, and there's a Tacos El Gordo coming soon which I am excited about.
Afton: If you don't mind, tell us a little bit about your family.
Joey: Well, my family is full of twins. My mom is a twin and her brother has twins, and I believe there's another set of twins on my grandfather’s side. Luckily, I am one of a kind, but I have two younger brothers who are going to SDSU and UCSD, and a younger sister who is working her way there as well.
