Dive into our beginner's guide to renting a storage unit to gain insights into storage options, the mechanics of storage rental, and more.

Reasons for renting self storage

People rent self-storage for many reasons; some common reasons people rent self-storage include:

Seasonal storage - During the off-season, it's a great idea to stow away your holiday decorations, costumes, seasonal clothing, and lawn equipment in storage.

Students - For students looking to avoid the hassle of transporting their dorm room belongings back home during summer break, renting a storage unit near campus can be a convenient solution.

Vehicle Storage - If you lack the necessary space at your current residence, consider storing your boat, RV, car, or motorcycle at a dedicated storage facility.

Need more space in the home - If you're not quite ready to part with your belongings by discarding, selling, or donating them, the best option is to store them.

Military members - This can be an option during their deployment.

House renovation - Renovations can be a time-consuming and messy process. To protect your possessions, you can opt to store your items in a storage unit until the renovation is finished.

Renting in person vs. online

When it comes to renting a storage unit, StaxUP Storage facilities offer 2 different options. We accept walk-ins but also have the convenience of contactless rentals where you can rent and reserve online. Renting in person is a suitable choice if you wish to inspect the facility beforehand.

With online rentals or reservations, you can reserve a spot at any time, even outside of regular facility hours, ensuring you secure the space you need.

What size storage unit do I rent?

StaxUP Storage facilities provide a range of storage unit sizes for rental. Typically, you can expect to find at least five standard sizes, which include 5’x5’, 5’x10’, 10’x10’, 10’x15’, and 10’x20’ storage units. Many of our facilities also offer larger options to accommodate varying needs.

How long am I able to rent a storage unit?

In general, you have the flexibility to rent a storage unit for as long as you need it. Whether you require short-term storage or a more extended period. Some individuals even opt for indefinite rentals to serve as additional space for personal or work-related items. It's advisable to inquire about the specific terms and options offered by your chosen storage company to align with your storage needs.

It's important to keep in mind that if you decide to cancel your storage rental, you'll typically need to notify the storage company by a specific date. Failure to do so could result in you being charged for the following month, even if you're no longer using the rental.

Indoor vs. outdoor storage

Indoor storage units are often climate-controlled spaces utilized for safeguarding items from environmental factors.

On the other hand, outdoor storage units are covered and secured and provide the convenience of drive-up access.

What do I need in a storage unit?

Make sure to consider these key factors:

  • Climate control
  • Degree of accessibility. For instance, do they offer 24-hour access to the storage units? Are they open on Sundays? Do they have holiday hours?
  • Video monitoring
  • Pricing and contracts offered
  • Sizes offered
  • Overall safety and security of the facility. For instance, how well-lit is the facility?

How do I prepare my items for storage?

Adequately preparing your items for storage is the key to maintaining their condition. Here are several tips on how to properly prepare your belongings for storage:

Read about the rules and restrictions – Check with your chosen storage company about the rules and restrictions when it comes to using their storage units. Make sure to thoroughly review what is and what isn’t allowed to be stored before putting items in storage. Typically, fireworks, food, chemicals, and other hazardous items are not allowed inside a storage unit.

Clean items – Before putting items in storage, we advise you to wipe your items down and/or clean them, if needed.

Wash and dry-clean clothes, vacuum pillows, and upholstery, and disinfect boxes. It’s crucial to ensure nothing is wet – otherwise, you could end up with mildewed belongings.

Pack everything carefully – We suggest packing all smaller items in cardboard boxes and/or clear plastic bins. Pack everything just as you would for a real move. This means using everything from bubble wrap and plastic wrap to packing paper and packing tape. This should prevent items from breaking while in transit and while in your storage unit.

Label everything – It’s extremely important that you label every box with exactly what’s inside. Use a permanent marker or printed labels and make sure the labeled part of the box is facing the front of the storage unit. A labeling strategy that works for many is to number each box and write the corresponding contents on a separate sheet of paper.

For instance, Box 1: 10 everyday dishes; Box 2: A dozen drinking glasses; Box 3: Wedding photo albums; Box 4: Books; Box 5: Christmas tree ornaments, etc. Make sure to save the inventory list in an easy-to-access location.

Besides household goods, what else can I store?

In addition to storing household goods, those using a storage unit can rent storage for specific items, such as boats, cars, RVs, and motorcycles. If you need to store appliances or large furniture items, you may need to consider renting an additional storage unit (or a larger one) as well.
