SELF STORAGE TEAM MILESTONE: HAPPY 1-YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO MORGAN CUPP

Below is an interview with Calexico, CA team member Morgan Cupp, who is celebrating her 1-year anniversary with StaxUP Storage.

Peter: Is this your 1 year anniversary we’re celebrating?
Morgan: Yes actually exactly today.
Peter: Congratulations that’s great
Morgan: Thank you.
Peter: How did you get started with StaxUP Storage?
Morgan: I had seen the StaxUP locations around the Calexico area and needed a job so I applied on their website, they had an opening, I interviewed and got the job.
Peter: That’s awesome, is it much different than the work you did before?
Morgan: I’ve been in the storage industry for 12 years, before that I was in property management
Peter: That’s great! So you’ve always worked in property management of some kind?
Peter: So what is it about property management that drew you to it since you’ve stayed such a long time? That’s pretty rare in just about any industry this age.
Morgan: Yeah I like the feeling of ownership and I think that Strat is going that direction. I really enjoy being around people and enjoy hearing their stories whether its where they are coming from or why they’re here or where they’re going. Storage is a little more fast paced than the apartment industry so you get to hear a little more about what people are doing. So I find it interesting.
Peter: So after 14 years of being in self storage do you have any go to stories when people ask what it’s like to work in self storage?
Morgan: I can’t think of any off of the top of my head but every site I’ve worked at there’s always something crazy or interesting that has happened. That’s what I like about the business – there are so many stories and people. It makes it interesting every day.
Peter: Since you’re dealing with people’s stuff it’s really personal too.
Morgan: Yeah yeah that too.
Peter: Tell me a little bit about the Portico facility you’re at Staxup Storage Portico right?
Peter: Does it have any distinct features or selling points?
Morgan: It’s a new acquisition, we just acquired it last year. The facility is 24 hours and a majority of our business is from commercial customers. A lot of importing and exporting stuff over the border. So we have a lot of businesses and carrier services that will store here and take items over to Mexico.
Peter: So it must be pretty high foot traffic then?
Morgan: Yes it’s very busy, there’s people 24/7 in and out.
Peter: So are you the onsite manager as well?
Morgan: Yes there’s an apartment here, so I live here
Peter: Oh man I hear that’s a pretty good deal.
Morgan: Yeah it isn’t bad, living here I don’t get bothered or anything.
Peter: Do you have any hobbies outside of work that you want people to know about?
Morgan: I really like hanging out with friends and family. I’m originally from Indiana so I don’t have a lot of family out here. I like to travel and see new places. I like hole-in-the-wall places to eat.
Peter: What was the last big trip you went on?
Morgan: The last big trip was last year I went up to Monterey and hung out and saw what Monterey had to offer. We actually drove up the 1 Coastal Highway and we got to go through Big Sur and stuff like that. I’d like to go down to Mexico and see different places and I’ll probably be going to Indiana this year as well.
Peter: Is there anything in the area that are go to places there in Calexico if someone comes to visit?
Morgan: I’ve only been here five months so I’m still getting to know the area. I’ve made some new friends and they’ve taken me over to MexiCali we get tacos there and they show me around and stuff.
Peter: At the end of these I like to ask if there’s anyone at Strat that you like to shoutout? Is there anyone on the team who really helps you out?
Morgan: Really the whole Riverside district, they really help me out and encourage me. I started as assistant manager and they really encouraged me to get my own property and move up. Everyone has really been welcoming and encouraging. I think Strat is a great company, there’s a great closeness in the company. Also the Imperial Valley teammates have really been welcoming and helpful with me getting adjusted to the area. They have been a really great help.
