Manny works at StaxUP Storage in Homeland, California.
Afton: What kind of jobs did you have before working in self storage?
Manny: Before I worked for this company, I worked in the automotive industry. I worked at AutoZone, Goodyear and Beemer Club.
Afton: How does self storage compare to your previous jobs?
Manny: It is similar to those jobs because I worked with customers. I maintained the stores and worked with my hands. The atmosphere does not compare. I do not feel like I am working myself to death. I feel welcomed in this company and it's more like family than just a job.
Afton: How did you start working in self storage?
Manny: Being around people who were already in the industry, learning about what it all entailed. Then a position came open and I asked to interview for it.
Afton: Does anything surprise you about the self storage industry?
Manny: All the time! Customers and the things that they do and say. Every day is different.
Afton: What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from working in self storage?
Manny: Time management is something. I have learned to stay on a schedule, which made me become more responsible. It has taught me a little bit of everything. I have learned how to do so many new things, like how to maintain lights and I have conquered my fear of heights by being on a ladder. I have improved my customer service skills with the day-to-day interaction with them.
“Manny is great! He is our ‘Handy’ Manny at the stores. I am able to give him tasks and he jumps right in to handle it. He keeps the cart room organized, lets me know when things are out or when a different way of doing things is easier or more efficient. I am so happy to have him on my team and an Assistant to Homeland. He is funny and outgoing and a great addition to the Riverside Team. Thank you for always being there and doing such a great job!"

Afton: Who has been the most helpful in answering questions you’ve had about the job?
Manny: My Senior Team Member Alisha has been helpful in my training and teaching me how everything works.
Afton: What do you wish you would have known before you started working in self storage?
Manny: I wish I would have had better computer skills, we type a lot and it would have been helpful to be faster. Also, learning to be better at sending and responding to emails.
Afton: What was your life like 1 year ago?
Manny: My life was in a hole. I was at an all-time low point in my life. I felt I was nothing and going nowhere. Having this job has given me a reason and a sense of living. It has opened so many new opportunities and things I never thought I could have. I would like to give thanks to Don, Julie, Monique, and Alisha for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to better myself. Each day has made me realize how thankful I am for everything I have been through and where I am going.
